Here at The Chip Inn, there is an array of familiar faces, many that have been on the scene for many, many years – none more so than joint owner Paul Austin was born in 1955. Paul started life in Banham, near to Diss in Norfolk. He spent the first 11 years enjoying the rural life in this quaint village – in 1966 he moved with his family to Norwich where his father, Earnest (Ernie) had decided upon a career change and had taken on ‘Chish & Fips’ located on Angel Road, Norwich.

Paul attended the Aiderman Jex School from 1966 – 1971, he was not particularly keen but ‘just did it’! Gratefully he was somewhat more enthusiastic about earning some pocket money, so when not at school, Paul could be found working in the family business, doing the potatoes and various cleaning tasks.

Having left school in 1971, Paul decided to become a trainee manager at the shoe specialist ‘Stead & Simpson’ based in Norwich, he took positions as a relief manager at the Gorleston, Gt. Yarmouth, Cromer and Bury St. Edmunds branches before reaching the dizzy heights of manager in the King’s Lynn store - this deviation in his career with fish and chips lasted just two years.

Come 1973 Paul was working full time in the fish and chip industry, stretching his time between three premises - ‘Chish & Fips’ (now under new ownership), the ‘Neptune Fish Bar’ and the predecessor of the ‘Chip Inn’ the ‘Manor Fish Bar’ located at the Manor Garage in Long Stratton. Paul’s father, Ernie and elder brother, Chris had taken over the lease on the Manor Fish Bar and were already making their mark as one of the best fish and chip shops in the area.

Paul obviously had a vision for the future and the potential staff requirements - whereupon in 1976 he found his wife – ‘Lynn’, who was at the same school as Paul and has been by his side not only in marriage but has also worked alongside him in the business as have both of his children, Jamie (just the top of his head can be seen over the top of the hot cabinets whilst working on the fryers!) and Keely (who is a part time waitress for the restaurant) And now with two Grandchildren, Isla-tay and Ethan - Paul looks set to have the future of The Chip Inn firmly in the family for many years to come.

The Chip Inn has been modernised, had a fire, acquired a wet fish shop, closed a wet fish shop and opened a restaurant – Paul and the Austin family have remained much the same with a tremendously loyal following both with their staff and customers

Paul spends his spare time getting up close and personal – to FISH! As if he does not see enough fish on a daily basis! He has a great love of Salmon fishing, with his favourite holiday taking him to either Scotland or Norway.
